Spotlight: Santorini (Thira), Greece
By Georgina
Cruz, Special Correspondent Cruises Dining and Drinking Volcanic Eruptions Royal
A popular stop
on many Greek Islands cruises, the approach to Santorini makes many a passenger
do a double take: from the distance, the islands’ cliffs appear to be
snow-covered. Actually, it is not snow,
but Santorini’s lovely white villages perched on the volcanic cliffs
overlooking sapphire waters.
The jewel of the
Cyclades (a group of Greek islands in the Aegean so called because they formed
a circle around the sacred isle of Delos), Santorini is actually made up of
several islands: Thíra, Thirassiá, Asproníssi, Palea and Nea Kaméni in the
southernmost part of Cyclades. According to Greek mythology, Poseidon, the god
of the sea, was furious at the Cyclades nymphs and turned them into islands.
Named by the Venetians after St. Irene in the
13th century, Santorini is one of the sites associated with the legendary lost
kingdom of Atlantis described by the Greek philosopher Plato –Jacques Cousteau,
was one of the explorers who searched for Atlantis around Santorini with an
18-man crew on the research vessel Calypso in the 1970s. Colonized by the
Minoans in 3000 B.C., a major volcanic eruption in 1450 B.C., gave the island
its crescent shape. The whole complex of islands in Santorini is still an active
volcano with its crater submerged – excursion boats are available to take
visitors to hot springs in the caldera.
