Σύμφωνα με ένα μέρος της,
Born in Santorini, to a farming family, Markos Kafouros' destiny was shaped at an early age when the island was still struggling to maintain its ancient agricultural heritage as tourism was transforming his home island into one of the world's top vacation destinations. While studying Agronomy at the Agricultural University of Athens, Kafouros began his tenure at SantoWines, the Union of Cooperatives of Santorini, as a part-time employee, eventually moving up to the position of Deputy Director. But, this was just the beginning for Kafouros, since he wanted to do more to preserve the island's ancient ways that he had come to know as a young boy and SantoWines would be his vehicle. Later Kafouros would be voted onto the Cooperative's Board of Directors and eventually become its president seven years ago. The rest of this story is how, under his leadership, SantoWines, is leading the way in balancing the island's agricultural tradition with economic reality. In fact, it may actually be the island's success as a travel destination that allows Santorini's culture of wine the chance it needs to reconnect with its past glory and become the catalyst for the re-emergence of Santorini's wine industry.
